Beauty: Top 5 Tips To... Make Your Eyes Look Bigger

The first thing people notice are our eyes. The eyes are the main focus in conversation, are what make us individual, and what allows us to see the world with. I often like to accentuate my eyes to make them look wider. Wide eyes make the eyes look more open and enhance your face.

Here are my Top 5 Tips to Achieve a wide-eye-look!

1. Curl the lashes. This may be an obvious one, but by using both eye lash curlers and a great mascara (I recommend Avons Mega Affects Mascara) will help widen the eyes, as sometimes are eyes are hidden by our eyelashes. Lashes with volume and curl really help to open the eyes.

2. Use Colour. Using colour in your eye make - up can really make your eyes pop.  The best result are when using colours which compliment your eye colour. Using colour in the eye lids doesn't have to be scary - try using a coloured mascara or eyeliner if you aren't quite brave enough for a bright eye shadow - yet!

3. Neat Brows. Keeping the eyebrows neat, full and maintained really helps to achieve wide looking eyes. By showing the arch in the brow, it gives the impression of more space, which gives the illusion of bigger eyes. 

4. Highlight. By highlighting the inner corners of your eyes and brow bones, this will help to make the eyes appear larger and wider. When highlighting areas around the eyes, it will give the illusion of more open eyes. Dark circles under the eyes can make the eyes look small and dull; using a highlighting concealer under the eyes will help to avoid large those dark circles. 

5. Smudge Eyeliner. A lot of people feel that eyeliner makes the eyes look smaller. try smudging the eyeliner instead of applying a straight line, as this isn't as harsh.

Get Spookily Good Skin This Halloween

Got your lantern carved, but wondering what to do with all that lovely pumpkin flesh?  Our beauty guru, Beth is here with some cheap but effective autumn skincare tips.

Pumpkin flesh has loads of skincare goodies in it: Vitamin A to cleanse and soften; antioxidants Vitamin C and Zinc which can also help boost collagen; AHAs to exfoliate and detoxify; Phosphorous to strengthen cell structure.  So, fight premature ageing, unclog pores and brighten your skin with these home-made body treats!

The Cooking Bit

Remove the seeds and slice your pumpkin into large chunks.  Bake chunks at 200 degrees Celsius (gas mark 6) or steam until soft enough to puree, then cool and blend to a puree.  Use in the following recipes.

Pumpkin Body Scrub

Blend 100g pureed pumpkin with 100g Demerara sugar and 50ml sunflower or grapeseed oil until smooth.

Pumpkin Body Mask

Blend 100g pureed pumpkin, 50g runny honey, 2 beaten egg yolks, 2 tablespoons plain yoghurt  and mix in enough olive oil to make it spreadable but not runny.

Home Spa:

  • Warm your bedroom, lay some towels on the bed, put on relaxing music and light scented candles.
  • Run a warm bath or shower, jump in and dampen your skin.  Apply the body scrub in small circular motions then rinse off.
  • Lightly towel dry leaving skin warm and damp.  Quickly apply the Body Mask.  Wrap yourself in the towels on the bed and wriggle under the duvet to stay warm.
  • Relax for about 10-15 mins.
  • Wash off the mask with warm water.
  •  Lightly apply pumpkin seed oil to your body when dry (sunflower or grapeseed oil will do if you can't get hold of pumpkin seed oil).

PS Remember, these recipes are fresh and need to be stored in the fridge and should not be kept for more than about 2-3 days.

Stop Smoking? Don’t Even Start!

When I used to partake in the practice, most of the advice I read to try and counteract my habit would be to "take large doses of antioxidants" or to "detox with milk thistle" or "take lots of vitamin C! Which led me to believe that I was protecting my body whilst simultaneously carrying out this terrible lifestyle choice. My advice? Don't bother starting at all or stop as soon as you feel brave enough.

Let’s be straight; cigarette smoking is just about the worst thing you can do to your body.

Pollutants

It affects the circulation, skeletal, nervous, reproductive and the respiratory systems negatively. There is absolutely no way that your body can function optimally, whilst it is being voluntarily barraged with pollutants and compounds such as:

  • Formaldehyde (embalming fluid)
  • Ammonia (toilet cleaner)
  • Acetone (nail polish remover) my personal favourite!

Smokers have increased nutritional needs due to their intake of carcinogens and other cancer causing chemicals so it's not just lung cancer to be concerned about but also high blood pressure, strokes emphysema, osteoporosis and decreased fertility.

But I'm going to focus on the effect smoking has on our largest organ - the skin.

Skin Trade

Because the toxins in cigarette smoke are absorbed directly into the bloodstream, the body then releases free radicals which scavenge and spread causing an inflammatory response which circulates throughout your body and causes blood vessels to constrict water content also decreases, resulting in dehydration. Oxygen levels reduce to dangerously low levels and immunity to illnesses is reduced. 

When you smoke, the organs, including the skin, become starved of oxygen and hurriedly poisoned by high levels of carbon monoxide.

Vitamin C helps to preserve collagen and elastin fibres that successfully keep skin supple, plump and youthful. With each cigarette, at least 30-45mg of this essential antioxidant is used up thus begins the rapid decline of your skin.

Smokers can use vitamin C and E lotions, serums and oils for strengthening and brightening skin and exfoliate regularly and gently to keep skin cells rejuvenated, particularly with enzymatic peels and scrubs.

Yes, quitting is tough and your mind needs to be supported as well as your body. In my studio, I have supported many through smoking cessation therapy programs and watched them become luminous and radiant with rude health.

However, try your best not to rely too heavily on nicotine patches or gums as these are nothing but a crutch to prolong the inevitable which makes it easier to relapse.

Your body expects you to be well; your body can be well. You place so many demands upon it, so do what you have to do to keep up! Why not feel and look and be your very best by making good healthy choices daily?

So do your skin some good, treat yourself to a regular facial or an intense but relaxing facial massage but best of all, give yourself a great reason to kick the habit!

Brush Your Skin Healthy!

The human body is very forgiving. It wants to be well. It wants to feel vibrant, agile and in shape  My job is to counsel people on how best to experience and relish in the reality that is a healthy mind and body. It is not to enable a bad diet and lifestyle and to tell you "everything in moderation!" with a fake smile in my worn-out old Birkenstocks!

Take 'get bikini ready', for instance. Why not always be bikini ready? Why add to the hassle of holiday packing by going on a starvation diet,  only to pile it back on once you've returned back home?

This is the time of year where the hemlines are shorter and more skin is on show so here are some handy tips to be summer ready every day, hassle-free!

First things first, your skin, as your body's largest organ and prime detoxification route let’s start by perking it up daily by dry skin brushing!

I swear by this. I have done it daily from the age of 21 and the results, I must say, are terrific and absolutely worth the few extra minutes of effort in the morning.

As well as removing dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling super soft, dry skin brushing tones muscles by stimulating nerve endings, improves your circulation and allows optimum absorption of your body oils and lotions. Ensure that you brush in light swift strokes moving toward the direction of the heart for maximum benefit. Start off lightly and when you're used to the brush, you can press a little bit firmer, especially on the thighs, buttocks and across the stomach.

The best time to body brush is prior to any activity that makes you perspire or just before a bath or shower, as you will want to wash away any dead built up skin cells. Body brushing once a day is sufficient, however, if you are feeling unwell, brush twice daily to help boost immunity.

Also, remember, and this is good advice all year round, to finish your shower with a 30 second cold blast! If you’re a wuss like me, start off by just blasting your feet, then advance up to the whole body. It's so refreshing and I promise you, you will feel great!

You can purchase a dry skin brush from most chemists or popular cosmetic outlets in Birmingham. Make sure it's not too soft, you don't want to feel as though the bristles resemble a dolls hairbrush.
